Third time is a charm.............. from Exuberant Color

On my third try I found the perfect brown for the claws on this Bear Paw block. The other 2 choices just weren't quite right.

The first two blocks are sewn.....

Trip Around the World debut............. from Exuberant Color

The Kaffe collective Trip Around the World is debuting as a finished top. I started sewing the stratas almost a year ago and they were pressed and ready to continue for many months. I finally got tired of moving them around from place to place and started the designing process. It is 58.5" x 77.5" right now.

Playing around............. from Exuberant Color

I got one section of 10 rows and another section of 5 rows sewn together yesterday. I have 4 more rows to sew and then join all of the sections. I could have finished it yesterday but I decided to bake shortbread cookies instead.

I'm still cutting up some leftovers from the setting triangles on the warm color Kaffe 16 patch quilt. I made 2 test blocks cut with the LeMoyne star die.

During the days this week I have been working on cutting colorwash kits and at night I sew. I have the left half of the TAW sewn now and after I took this photo I brought the next 5 rows upstairs to sew. I need to do some unpicking today.

Trip Around the World and into the past................... from Exuberant Color

My unpicking the bottom half strips is just past the center now. I sewed the bottom half of the left 10 rows to the top halves and then sewed the long seams from top to bottom. By the end of the week I should have this all sewn together.

Finish #2 for 2021....... from Exuberant Color

I finished another table runner. This one is made from die cut pieces that I had a friend cut before I had a die cutter. It is about 14" x 41" and it is ditch quilted and has a hand finished binding.

I don't normally choose a light color for binding but I needed something that went well with the backing fabric (also a Kaffe Fassett fabric) because I thought it might be used with either side up. First finish for 2021............ from Exuberant Color

16.25" x 31.5" batik Double 4 Patch table runner.

I like to put a batik with a large pattern on the back of the table runners. A nice batik stripe binding finished it off. It took about 2.5 hours to hand stitch the binding. I always think it is going to go faster because it is a small item but the perimeter is equal to 1/3 of the perimeter of a good size throw quilt and that usually takes about 7 hours to stitch.

Continuing projects................... from Exuberant Color

I made some wild blue combination blocks yesterday. It is always a surprise how they turn out.

The last 2 are lower contrast than some of the others. I also cut some more light fabrics to go with the last 3 dark fabrics I cut on Saturday. I have 21 blocks finished and they are 9" finished size so there is a long way to go on this project.

Multi-tasking again.............. from Exuberant Color

2 candidates.................. from Exuberant Color

I tried 2 fabrics for the setting triangles. The top one is orange Shaggy and the bottom one is red Cactus Flower. I'm wondering if I can use both of them.

It's really hard to tell how they will work with just one of each folded into triangles. I just couldn't get motivated to cut them so I worked on something else.

Cutting table............ from Exuberant Color

I cleaned off this cutting table yesterday and immediately chose 2 projects to work on. I have stratas sewn for a throw size Kaffe Trip Around the World. I need to sew the last seam to make them into a tube and then slice off segments to start designing on the wall.

The other project is to go through that box of batik scraps and choose some to cut for more pineapple log cabin blocks. I only need blocks with light centers and corners to go with the 10 blocks I have in the orphan block box. I can see ...

I made this quilt once before with a travel theme. This time I used florals and a range of solid colors. It was another quilt that requires careful planning and organization, but it was fun to make!

I used a cheater fabric for the back to continue the floral idea, then I added a striped binding to finish. It is brighter than it looks in the photo--I took the photo on a cloudy day.

Strata Gradation/Colorwash........ from Exuberant Color

As I get ready to teach my online Colorwash 360 class again I start thinking about all of the ways I use smooth blend/gradation in my other quilts. One of them is Trip Around the World which is made from strata (set of strips sewn together).

Another is the strata for Strips 'n Curves. They both depend on a smooth blend/gradation for the resulting glow in the finished piece. Lessons learned in my class lead to stunning quilts in the future for my students.

A Trip Around The World from Wedding Dress Blue

For some time now I have contemplated making a Trip Around the World (scrappy, of course) out of solids. There have been some beautiful ones out there as inspiration and today (Friday) was the day.

I hauled out the solids bin and got the little pieces. Ta-dah! The first block.

You will notice that it is not strip pieced. There are some scraps that will only give a single square, and I want to be able to use those also. It might take a bit longer on the front end, but the results should be worth it.

First finish for April 2020 from Exuberant Color

I wrestled the Kaffe fabric Trip Around the World quilt up on my double design wall. It finished at 77.5" x 96.5".

The backing fabric is a Kaffe wide backing. It is a really soft sateen.

18 of the fabrics are Kaffe's designs, one is a Brandon Mably print (red stripe) and one is a Martha Negley (red cherries).

This view shows how much of the double design wall (96" x 84") is covered by the quilt.

I decided to pick the Jonquils because we are supposed to get 3" of snow from early morning through 10 ...

Snow?.....and sewing progress........... from Exuberant Color

This is what we woke up to yesterday morning. Chicago records say it is the largest snowfall on any April 15th. Last year we had snow on April 14th. And to top that we are expecting even more snow Thursday night into Friday morning.

This is pretty typical that we get some snow after the forsythia leaves have started to grow.

The Hostas are peeking up through the snow.

I knew I should have picked the Jonquils Tuesday afternoon.

These 3 squirrels quickly cleared the snow under the bird feeders because I had dumped extra birdseed there the night before ...

I finally got this TAW quilted. It took a few hours to do and I had a problem in one area of it. All is well now. It is off the frame and trimmed.

This one if for my bed so it got a big loose meander. I haven't chosen a binding yet, that will be done today.

Last night was my 3 hour TV night so I designed the sixth Spring Star and got the rows sewn in one direction. I have several things to press today so I'll get the last seams sewn after pressing.
